April: The Global Sweet Spot

April is probably the single best month to be anywhere that is not Western Europe or North America during school holidays. Most of Asia, the Mediterranean, and North Africa hit a weather sweet spot where temperatures are warm but not oppressive, rain is minimal, and the peak summer crowds have not yet arrived.

Quick picks: Japan cherry blossoms | Morocco | Jordan and Petra | South Korea | Skip: Europe during Easter school holidays
Updated April 20263 min read

I call April the “global sweet spot” because more destinations are simultaneously at their best than in any other month. Japan has cherry blossoms in early April and fresh green foliage by mid-month. Greece, Turkey, and Morocco are warm enough for beach days but cool enough for sightseeing. Jordan is perfect for Petra and Wadi Rum before the summer heat makes both miserable. Bali enters its dry season. The list goes on.

The catch with April is Easter and spring break pricing. Flights to popular destinations spike around Easter week, sometimes by 40-50 percent. The strategy is to book either the week before or the two weeks after Easter. Post-Easter April is one of the best value windows of the year for Mediterranean and Asian travel.

We did Bali in April 2024 and it was ideal. Dry, sunny, not too hot, and the tourist volume was manageable even at places like Ubud and Uluwatu. Here is what I would prioritize this month.

OPTIMAL DESTINATIONS

Destination Why April Conditions
Japan Peak cherry blossoms central regions Most magical time of year

Peru Dry season begins Good for Machu Picchu
Australia Autumn comfort Great for exploration
Namibia Post-rain season Wildlife concentrates
Cyprus Perfect spring weather Ideal temperatures
Malta Excellent conditions Warm, minimal rain
