August: The Great Divide

August splits the travel world in two: Northern Hemisphere at peak prices, Southern Hemisphere in winter — and the smart money goes south.

Quick picks: Scandinavia (long days) | Masai Mara migration | South Africa (winter safari) | Peru dry season | Skip: Mediterranean beaches (overcrowded)

August splits the travel world into two camps: the Northern Hemisphere is in full summer mode with the highest prices and biggest crowds of the year, while the Southern Hemisphere offers its best value in the depths of winter. Smart August travelers play the asymmetry. Patagonia, New Zealand, and southern Africa are all in their off-season, which means dramatically lower prices and none of the reservation headaches that plague European travel in August.

In Europe, August is when locals take their own vacations. Paris empties out as Parisians head south, Italian cities slow down during Ferragosto, and Mediterranean beach towns reach peak capacity. If you must do Europe in August, go to Scandinavia or the British Isles where summer is short and the locals are out enjoying it rather than fleeing.

We did a road trip through Germany and Belgium in August for the F1 Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, and the weather was perfect. Northern Europe in August is pleasant, with temperatures around 20-25 degrees and long daylight hours. It is the rest of the continent that becomes overwhelming.

Adventure travel peaks in August. Kilimanjaro, the Inca Trail, and Himalayan trekking all hit their best weather windows. If big physical goals are your thing, August is the month to schedule them.
