Why February Hits Different for Travel

February is still winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which means safari conditions in East Africa are excellent and diving in the Southern Hemisphere peaks.

Quick picks: East Africa safari | Maldives | New Zealand summer | Carnival in Rio | Skip: Europe unless you love the cold

February sits in an interesting position on the travel calendar. It is still winter in the Northern Hemisphere, which means safari conditions remain excellent in East Africa and diving in Southeast Asia is at its peak. But it is also the month when the Great Migration reaches its most dramatic phase, the calving season on the Serengeti plains draws some of the densest predator activity of the year.

I think of February as the last affordable month before spring break pricing kicks in across the tropics. Flights to Thailand, Bali, and the Maldives are still reasonable through mid-February, but they start climbing the moment US and European school holidays begin. If you can be flexible on your dates, the first two weeks of February are where the value is.

The Caribbean is fully in its dry season and hurricane-free window. Water temperatures hover around 26-28 degrees, trade winds keep things comfortable, and visibility for diving and snorkeling is as good as it gets. We went to Bonaire in February once and the water clarity was surreal.

Here is what I would book in February and the specific conditions that make each destination worth considering.
