Why January Is One of the Best Months to Travel

January is when most people stare at credit card bills — which is exactly why flights are cheap and destinations are empty.

Quick picks: South Africa (summer) | Thailand and Bali (dry season) | Tanzania safari | Maldives | Skip: Caribbean (peak prices, meh weather)

January is when most people are nursing post-holiday fatigue and staring at credit card bills. Which is exactly why it is one of the best months to book a trip. Prices on flights to Africa drop after the December rush, Southeast Asian beach destinations hit their dry season sweet spot, and the Southern Hemisphere is in full summer mode. I have traveled in January twice now, once to South Africa and once to Southeast Asia, and both times I was struck by how uncrowded the major destinations felt compared to the peak European summer months.

The real draw of January travel is the wildlife. East Africa’s Great Migration enters its calving season on the Serengeti, which means hundreds of thousands of wildebeest giving birth over a few weeks while predators circle. If you are a safari person, this is the single best month to go. Diving conditions peak across the Indian Ocean and the Coral Triangle, with visibility often exceeding 30 meters in places like Raja Ampat and the Similan Islands.

From a pricing standpoint, January falls into what I call the “resolution window.” Everyone is focused on gym memberships and dry January, not vacations. Flights to Nairobi, Cape Town, and the Maldives are often 20-30 percent cheaper than they will be in February or March. Hotels in Southeast Asia run promotions to fill rooms after the Christmas surge. If you can travel the second or third week of January, you will find the best combination of weather, wildlife, and value.

Here are the destinations I would prioritize in January and why each one works in this specific window.

OPTIMAL DESTINATIONS

Destination Why January Conditions
Kenya (Four Seasons Safari) Great Migration calving season 20-26°C, dry, excellent game viewing
Tanzania (Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara) Peak wildlife activity Perfect temperatures, minimal rain
South Africa Safari Summer season, excellent wildlife Warm, some afternoon rain
Myanmar (Bagan) Cool, dry season begins 20-30°C, perfect temple weather
Maldives Northeast monsoon – best diving 26-29°C water, crystal clear
Philippines (Palawan, Coron) Dry season, calm seas 27-29°C, excellent diving
Egypt (Sharm El Sheikh, Luxor) Mild temperatures 24°C water, great visibility
Venezuela Dry season Optimal for wildlife viewing
Puerto Rico Winter escape 26°C, trade winds
Mauritius Summer season Warm, tropical

PRIME DIVING CONDITIONS

  • Similan Islands, Thailand – Whale shark season begins, manta rays
  • Raja Ampat, Indonesia – Peak coral conditions, excellent visibility
  • Palau – Stable weather, great marine life
  • Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia – Hammerhead squadrons, eagle rays
  • Red Sea, Egypt – Year-round excellence, comfortable temperatures

AVOID THIS MONTH

  • Whitsundays, Australia – Wet season, stinger risk
  • Europe – Cold, limited daylight

Antarctica – Too early for penguin viewing
