July: Peak Everything

July is peak season almost everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, which makes it both the most popular and the most expensive month to travel. European beaches are at capacity, national parks in the American West are crowded, and flights to basically anywhere warm cost 30-50 percent more than they did six weeks ago. If you have flexibility, almost any other month offers better value. But if July is your window, there are ways to make it work.

Quick picks: Iceland (midnight sun) | Canadian Rockies | Bali dry season | Tanzania migration | Skip: Paris and Rome in July (too hot, too crowded)

The trick with July travel is going where the crowds are not. While everyone funnels into Santorini, Barcelona, and the Amalfi Coast, places like Slovenia, Albania, and the Azores offer the same Mediterranean climate at half the price and a tenth of the foot traffic. The Great Migration river crossings in Kenya and Tanzania hit their most dramatic phase in July, making it one of the two best safari months of the year.

For marine life, July brings humpback whale season to Tonga and the start of sardine runs along the South African coast, one of the most intense marine spectacles on the planet. Diving conditions in the Maldives shift to the southwest monsoon, which brings manta rays to cleaning stations in huge numbers.

Here is the full picture of what July offers and what to prioritize if this is your travel month.

The Southern Hemisphere in July is winter, which means ski season in New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. If you are a skier or snowboarder, the Remarkables near Queenstown or Portillo in Chile offer uncrowded runs at a fraction of what European or North American resorts charge. We have not done this yet but it is high on the list.

From a budget perspective, July is when you need to be most strategic. Book at least three months in advance for European destinations. Use points and miles aggressively, the redemption value on peak-season awards is significantly higher than off-peak. And consider destinations that are counter-seasonal or off the beaten path. Croatia in July is cheaper than Italy. Montenegro is cheaper than Croatia. Albania is cheaper than Montenegro. The Adriatic coast offers the same turquoise water and Mediterranean food at a fraction of the price as you move south and east.

One more thing about July: the Great Migration river crossings in the Mara are not guaranteed on any specific day. Safari operators track the herds and will move you to the right location, but you may need to spend four or five days in the Masai Mara to catch a crossing. Budget accordingly and do not try to squeeze a migration safari into a two-day visit.
