June: When the Northern Hemisphere Ignites

June is when the Northern Hemisphere ignites — European cities fill up, Mediterranean beaches kick into gear, and the long days make everything possible.

June is the official start of summer travel season in the Northern Hemisphere, and it shows. European cities fill up, Mediterranean beach towns kick into high gear, and the long daylight hours in Scandinavia and Iceland create conditions that do not exist at any other time of year. The midnight sun above the Arctic Circle is one of those things that sounds gimmicky until you experience it, and then you understand why people fly to Tromso and Reykjavik specifically for it.

The trade-off with June is pricing. Flights to Europe spike, hotels in popular destinations like Santorini and the Amalfi Coast reach their highest rates, and you need to book months in advance for the best properties. But June also has a few secrets. Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Portugal, and the Baltic states are all significantly cheaper than Western Europe while offering equally good weather and often better food.

We did the Balkans in June and the Adriatic coast was warm, clear, and a fraction of the cost of the Italian or French Riviera. Dubrovnik was busy but Split and Montenegro were manageable. If you want a European summer trip without the premium prices, look east and south.

Here is what June looks like across the globe and where I would focus.
