November: The Quiet Month

November is the most underappreciated month on the travel calendar. It is too late for European autumn and too early for Christmas markets. The Northern Hemisphere is gray and cold. And that is exactly why Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Indian Ocean islands are at their absolute best. While everyone at home is focused on Thanksgiving and early holiday shopping, the smartest travelers I know are booking November trips to Thailand, Jordan, the Maldives, and Morocco.

Thailand enters its cool season in November, which means temperatures drop from the brutal 35-degree summer heat to a pleasant 25-30 range. Rain stops, the sky clears, and the islands on both the Andaman and Gulf coasts become diveable. We went to Koh Lipe in November once and had some of the best snorkeling visibility of any trip we have done.

The Middle East is at its best in November. Jordan, Oman, and the UAE are all in their sweet spot where daytime temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing and the evenings are cool enough for outdoor dining. If Petra and Wadi Rum are on your list, November is when you want to be there.

From a pricing perspective, November sits in what the airline industry calls the “dead zone” between fall break and Christmas. Flights to almost everywhere are cheaper than they will be in December, and hotel availability is wide open.
