September: The Best-Kept Secret in Travel

If I could only travel one month for the rest of my life, it would be September — summer crowds gone, Mediterranean weather perfect, prices dropping.

Quick picks: Croatia coast | Greek Islands | Morocco | Japan before foliage | Skip: Southeast Asia (monsoon season)

If I could only travel in one month for the rest of my life, it would be September. The summer crowds have gone home, the weather across southern Europe and the Mediterranean is still warm, prices drop 20-40 percent from their August peaks, and the quality of light in places like Italy, Greece, and Turkey is at its most photographic. We went to Italy in September 2024 and it was exactly this: golden light, comfortable temperatures, and restaurants that were happy to see you rather than exhausted from three months of peak tourist season.

September is also when wine harvest season hits across France, Italy, Spain, and California. If wine tourism interests you, September in the Douro Valley, Tuscany, or Napa is hard to beat. Many wineries open their doors for harvest events that are not available at other times of year.

For beach destinations, September extends the summer without the summer pricing. The Mediterranean stays warm enough for swimming through the end of the month. Greek islands that were overrun in July are suddenly manageable. The Amalfi Coast, which is borderline unusable in August due to crowds, becomes pleasant again.

Here is why September works so well across so many destinations.
