If you only carry one Marriott card you are leaving roughly 90,000 Bonvoy points and two free-night certificates on the table every year. The pairing that actually compounds is the Bonvoy Brilliant (personal, Amex) plus the Bonvoy Business (Amex). We used exactly this stack to clear 360,000 points for the Pacific Coast trip across Seattle, Portland, and LA.
TL;DR — why pair Brilliant + Business
- Brilliant anniversary: 1 free-night cert up to 85K (worth ~$400)
- Business anniversary: 1 free-night cert up to 35K (worth ~$200)
- Business 15x at Marriott + 4x at gas/shipping/wireless/restaurants stacks with Brilliant 6x
- Combined welcome bonuses (when both open) routinely 250K+ points
- Titanium status via Brilliant — suite upgrades are real on property stays we tracked
How the points actually accumulate
The mistake I made for two years was putting every Marriott stay on Brilliant (6x) when the Business card earns 15x base, stacking on top of the ~17.5x Elite earning. A $400 hotel night on Business = 6,000 points. The same night on Brilliant = 2,400 points. Over a year of travel that is the entire Seattle-to-Portland Amtrak leg funded by the swipe you forgot about.
Spend buckets that matter
| Spend category | Best card | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Marriott hotel stays | Business | 15x base (+ Elite) |
| Gas, shipping, wireless, restaurants | Business | 4x |
| Flights booked direct | Brilliant | 3x |
| Worldwide restaurants (non-Marriott) | Brilliant | 3x |
| Everything else | Brilliant | 2x |
Business is your hotel + fuel + phone bill card. Brilliant is your flights + dining + catch-all card. If one of your cards is doing double duty you are losing 1-9x per swipe.
The two free-night certs, used correctly
Brilliant’s 85K cert is powerful but narrow — it only unlocks on properties pricing at or below 85K points/night. That is most city-center Marriotts on weekdays but almost zero resort Saturdays. Our play: Brilliant cert on a Wednesday at the Sheraton Grand Seattle (72K points, cash rate $340). Business 35K cert on a Saturday at the Courtyard Savannah Downtown (33K points, cash rate $280). Combined you replaced $620 in cash hotel spend with two anniversary gifts.
When pairing does not make sense
- You spend fewer than 10 Marriott nights a year — Bonvoy Boundless (Chase) is cheaper-annual-fee pair.
- You are chasing Hyatt globalist — skip Marriott, concentrate there.
- You have no W-2 or 1099 income to justify a Business card application.
Application order we used
- Brilliant first (consumer 5/24 rules less relevant, Amex not counted).
- Wait 90 days, meet MSR, pocket welcome bonus.
- Apply Business under same Amex login. Second welcome bonus eligibility confirmed by Amex “check if you qualify” link before applying.
- Set Business as default card for all Marriott stays, gas, phone.
- Year 2: downgrade one or both if travel volume drops — both downgrade paths preserve points balance.
