South Africa is the kind of destination where the planning matters as much as the trip itself. Between safety logistics, driving on the left, and choosing between Cape Town and Kruger, there is a lot to get right. Here is what I would do differently.
Start in Cape Town, Not Johannesburg
Cape Town clusters its attractions within 30 to 40 minutes of each other. Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, beaches, and the Stellenbosch wine region are all accessible from one base. Johannesburg is culturally rich but sprawling. Start with Cape Town for four to five days, then add the Garden Route or fly to Kruger for safari.
Hike Table Mountain in Groups of Four or More
Table Mountain trails saw over 47 attacks in the first five months of 2025. Do not hike solo. Go in groups of four or more, stick to popular routes, and start early. The cableway operates even during load shedding with backup generators, but expect longer queues and half-capacity cars. Get up there on your first or second day to orient yourself to the city below.
Use Uber Everywhere After Dark
Regular taxis are unreliable and sometimes unsafe. Uber works well throughout Cape Town and Johannesburg. After dark, never walk between venues. Keep your phone out of sight in public, skip headphones, and carry minimal cash. The safe zones include the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, City Bowl, Constantia, and Stellenbosch.
Drive the Garden Route in Daytime Only
The Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is stunning but long. Plan daytime drives only. Night driving on unfamiliar roads with wildlife crossings is risky. Rent a standard sedan since a 4×4 is unnecessary for main highways. Economy cars run 350 to 550 rand per day. March and May are the cheapest months at around 18 to 19 dollars per day.
The Wine Region Is 20 Minutes Away
Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and sits 15 to 20 minutes from central Cape Town. Stellenbosch has over 200 estates and is 30 to 40 minutes out. Franschhoek is the most scenic. You do not need a full day tour to enjoy world-class wine. A self-drive afternoon in Constantia works perfectly between Table Mountain and dinner.
Budget for Tipping Generously
Restaurant tips are 12 to 15 percent. Bar tips are 10 to 20 percent per drink. Minimum wage staff earn 28 rand per hour, roughly 1.50 dollars. Tips are essential income, not optional. Always carry small bills.
What I Would Prioritize
Five days in Cape Town covering Table Mountain, wine in Constantia, and the V&A Waterfront. Three days driving the Garden Route through Knysna and Wilderness. Two days at a game reserve near Stellenbosch for a Big Five safari without the long flight to Kruger.
