Scandinavia has been on the list since we started dreaming about Northern Lights and fjords. After pricing it out three times, here is what I would change about the plan to actually make it work without spending ten thousand dollars.
It Is Genuinely Expensive and You Cannot Avoid It
Budget hotels start at 100 to 200 dollars per night. A restaurant meal in Norway costs 25 dollars or more. Daily food runs about 37 dollars per person eating out. The realistic minimum is 100 to 120 dollars per day on hostels and groceries, or 200 dollars per day for comfortable travel. Sweden is the cheapest of the three countries and Norway is the most expensive. Accept this before you book.
Shop at ICA, Lidl, and Netto
The single biggest money saver is buying groceries instead of eating out. Supermarket chains like ICA, Lidl, ALDI, and Netto sell ready-to-eat meals, bread, cheese, and salads for under 15 dollars per day. Make lunch your big meal and cook or graze for dinner. This cuts daily food costs in half.

Take the Train Between Cities
Copenhagen to Stockholm is five hours by direct train. The overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo saves a night of hotel costs and is scenic. The train from Oslo to Bergen takes six to seven hours through spectacular mountain and fjord scenery but sells out early. Book that leg weeks in advance. The Eurail Scandinavia Pass covers all four Nordic countries but is not always cheaper than point-to-point tickets.
Spend Less Time in Oslo, More in Bergen
Most travelers say one to two days in Oslo is enough. Bergen is the gateway to the fjords and deserves three or more days. The Norway in a Nutshell excursion from Bergen delivers stunning fjord scenery with fewer crowds than summer tours. If your time is limited, prioritize Bergen and the fjords over Oslo every time.
2026 Is the Year for Northern Lights
Solar Cycle 25 peaks in 2026, meaning stronger and more frequent aurora displays. This will not repeat until the mid-2030s. The viewing window runs September through March, with the darkest months from November through January offering the best odds. Late January through March balances long dark nights with enough daylight for daytime activities. Northern Norway, Swedish Lapland, and Finnish Lapland are the prime viewing spots.
Carry Only Cards
Sweden barely accepts cash anymore. Most shops, restaurants, and even market stalls are card-only. Denmark and Norway are similar. Carry a Visa or Mastercard with no foreign transaction fees and leave the cash at home.
What I Would Prioritize
Copenhagen for two days, train to Stockholm for three days, overnight ferry to Oslo for one day, then train to Bergen for three days of fjords. Ten days total, heavy on Bergen and Stockholm, light on Oslo. Time it for late September for the first Northern Lights of the season and mild autumn weather.
