What I’d Do Differently: Iceland Edition

Updated April 2026 | 4 min read

Iceland is one of those destinations where bad planning costs you three times what good planning does. Between car rental, food, and accommodation, every decision either saves or wastes hundreds of dollars. Here is what I would do differently.

Rent a Car, But Know What You Are Getting Into

Small cars run 40 to 90 dollars per day, mid-size 70 to 140, and 4×4 SUVs 100 to 220 dollars per day. Summer rates are two to three times higher than May or September. Fuel dropped significantly in 2026 after Iceland removed fuel taxes, but at 215 to 220 kronur per liter it is still expensive. Never let the tank drop below half between Hofn and Egilsstadir or north of Myvatn. Gas stations are sparse and distances are long.

Do Not Attempt the Ring Road in Under Seven Days

The Ring Road is 1,332 kilometers. Seven days is the absolute minimum and feels rushed. Ten to fourteen days is ideal. Two to four hours of driving per day leaves time to actually stop and explore. The Golden Circle is a 300-kilometer loop doable in one day if you only have a long weekend. Do one or the other, not a half-hearted version of both.

Stay Off F-Roads Without a 4×4

F-roads are mountain routes that legally require a four-wheel drive vehicle. Driving a 2WD on an F-road brings fines of 2,900 to 10,000 dollars and voids all insurance. Water crossings on F-roads are never covered by insurance even in a 4×4 because engine water damage is excluded. F-roads are only open from mid-June to September depending on snowfall. If an F-road is on your route, rent the right vehicle.

Check Road Conditions Multiple Times Per Day

Icelandic weather changes fast. A clear morning becomes a whiteout blizzard by noon. Roads close without warning. Check vedur.is and road.is before every drive. Allow more time than GPS suggests. Sheep wander onto roads and slow traffic. This is not optional advice. It is survival strategy.

Sky Lagoon Over Blue Lagoon for Value

Blue Lagoon is iconic and worth seeing once. It is 45 minutes from Reykjavik and 15 minutes from Keflavik airport. But it is crowded, tourist-heavy, and the mineral-heavy water damages hair. Sky Lagoon is closer to Reykjavik, has ocean views, a luxury experience, is less crowded, and your hair is safe. If you can only do one, Sky Lagoon wins on value. Do both if time and budget allow.

2026 Is the Best Year for Northern Lights

Solar Cycle 25 peaks in 2026, producing stronger and more frequent aurora displays. This will not repeat until the mid-2030s. The viewing season runs September through April. January has the longest dark nights. February has the clearest skies. March offers stronger geomagnetic activity around the spring equinox. A five to seven night stay during peak season gives good odds, especially in 2026. Check forecasts on vedur.is and the My Aurora Forecast app.

Cook Your Own Food or Go Broke

A basic restaurant meal costs 2,000 to 3,500 kronur. Main courses at sit-down restaurants run 5,500 to 7,500 kronur, which is 40 to 55 dollars. Fine dining hits 15,000 kronur or more. The South Coast and Golden Circle are 50 percent more expensive than the north. Shop at Bonus, Kronan, and Netto supermarkets. Make lunch your big meal when restaurants offer deals. This single habit saves hundreds over a week.

What I Would Prioritize

Ten days on the Ring Road clockwise, starting with the Golden Circle and South Coast, then east to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, north to Myvatn and Akureyri, and back west through the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Sky Lagoon on arrival, Blue Lagoon on departure. Late September for Northern Lights and autumn colors without winter road closures.
