Free Stopover Hacks: 7 Airlines That Give You a Free Hotel or City Tour
Updated October 2026 | 8 min read
Which airlines give you a free hotel on a layover? As of October 2026, Turkish Airlines (one night in economy, two from the US), Emirates (Dubai Connect, on connections that qualify), and Ethiopian Airlines (8 to 24 hours) give a free room. Qatar sells stopover rooms from $14 a night, Singapore Airlines only discounts them, and TAP and Icelandair make the stopover itself free.

Most travelers treat layovers as dead time: scroll the phone at the gate, eat overpriced airport pizza, wait for boarding. A few airlines will hand you a hotel, a tour, or a free week in a second country if you build the stopover into the booking on purpose. The catch is that “free” means five different things depending on the airline, so the table below separates them.
I came at this from the Singapore side. I flew Singapore Airlines through Changi to reach Bali (JFK to Singapore to Denpasar and back, April 2024), so “what does the airline actually give you there?” was a real question for me.
Which airlines give you a free hotel or city tour?
Turkish Airlines, Emirates, and Ethiopian Airlines give a free hotel room on qualifying layovers (Emirates’ and Ethiopian’s windows are the least consistent across sources). Changi Airport (not the airline) and Turkish Airlines run free city tours. Qatar, TAP, and Icelandair discount or free the stopover but not the room. Terms below are as of October 2026 and change often, so confirm on the airline’s page before you book.
| Airline and stop | What you actually get | Layover needed | What it costs | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines, Istanbul | Free hotel with breakfast; separate free city tour (Touristanbul) | Hotel: 20 hours to 7 days. Tour: 6 to 24 hours | Free (visa, transfers extra) | Apply 72+ hours ahead; cannot use hotel and tour on the same layover |
| Qatar Airways, Doha | Discounted hotel; free transit hotel is a separate program | 12 to 96 hours | From $14 per person per night (4-star, room only) | Per-person rate assumes two sharing; subject to availability |
| Singapore Airlines and Changi Airport, Singapore | Free Changi Airport city tour (open to any transit passenger); airline hotel discounts, not free nights | Tour: 5.5 to 24 hours | Tour free; hotels discounted | No free hotel on a standard ticket |
| TAP Air Portugal, Lisbon or Porto | Free stopover in Portugal; partner discounts; 25% off a domestic flight | 1 to 10 days | No extra airfare | No free hotel |
| Icelandair, Reykjavik | Free stopover in Iceland | Up to 7 nights (21 on Flex fares) | No extra airfare | Flights only; cheapest fare allows 1 to 3 nights |
| Emirates, Dubai | Dubai Connect: hotel, meals, transfers | Terms page: 6 to 26 hours for First and Business; other sources say economy qualifies too | Free | Must be the shortest connection; lead time is 12 to 24 hours depending on the source |
| Ethiopian Airlines, Addis Ababa | Free hotel, meals, transit visa | 8 to 24 hours | Free | No hotel if an earlier connection exists; some passengers report refusals |
Best for a genuinely free night: Turkish Airlines. One night in economy, two on a round trip that starts in the US.
Best for a cheap luxury night: Qatar Airways. A 5-star room from $24 a night beats most airport hotels.
Best for a free tour: Changi Airport’s tour (Singapore) or Touristanbul (Istanbul). No ticket upgrade required, just a long enough layover.
Best for a second destination on one fare: TAP or Icelandair. You pay for the hotel, but not for a second flight.
Does Turkish Airlines really give a free hotel in Istanbul?
Yes, with conditions. Passengers connecting through Istanbul Airport between two international cities, with a layover of 20 hours to 7 days, get one night in a 4-star hotel in economy or two nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel in business. Round trips that start in the US add a night (two in economy, three in business). Breakfast is included; everything else is yours to pay for.
The rules are strict. You apply at least 72 hours before the flight (applications after you land are refused), the ticket must be on Turkish Airlines stock as one round-trip booking, the free nights must be consecutive, and you cannot pick the hotel. N and R fare classes are excluded, according to travel guides that track the terms. The separate Touristanbul program is a free guided city tour for layovers of 6 to 24 hours, with a meal included on most tours. Register at the arrivals-level Touristanbul desk at least 30 minutes before departure. Turkish Airlines does not let you use the hotel and the tour on the same layover, so pick one. Treat the free night as a bonus on a flight you were already taking, not a reason to reroute through Istanbul at a higher fare.
How much is a Qatar Airways stopover hotel?
A Qatar Airways stopover hotel starts at $14 per person per night for a 4-star, $24 for a 5-star, $31 for a 5-star with beach access, and $83 for a luxury 5-star with breakfast, as of October 2026. It covers confirmed Qatar, code-share, and oneworld tickets with a Doha transit of 12 to 96 hours.
Those rates are the starting price for one night, quoted per person with two sharing a room, and they climb with the hotel and the season. The program allows up to four nights per direction, and the cheapest tiers are room only. It is not free, but a 5-star room for about the price of a decent airport dinner is hard to beat.
Qatar also runs a separate free transit hotel for eligible long layovers (roughly 8 to 24 hours, 3-star in economy), requested through the airline at least 72 hours ahead. Saver award fares usually do not qualify.
Does Singapore Airlines offer a complimentary stopover?
Not a free hotel, as far as I can verify. As of October 2026 Singapore Airlines’ stopover page offers discounted rates at partner hotels, and the only free perk is Changi Airport’s own city tour (open to every transit passenger, whatever airline they fly). A claim that business and first class passengers get one or two free nights circulates online, but I could not confirm it on Singapore Airlines’ own pages.
What I can confirm: the Free Singapore Tour is a 2.5-hour guided trip for transit passengers with a layover of 5.5 to 24 hours. There are seven daily departures across four itineraries (heritage, city sights, river and Marina Bay Sands, and Sentosa), you can pre-book up to 50 days ahead, and walk-ins are possible at the transit booths if seats remain.
On the hotel side, Singapore Airlines’ stopover offers appear after you book a multi-city itinerary with Singapore as the stopover. One deal tracker (aifly.one) that checked the page in August 2026 reported discounts of up to 30 percent at a few partner hotels and hotel credits at the Fullerton properties. That is a discount, not a complimentary night. On many KrisFlyer award itineraries the airline allows a stopover of up to 30 days online, but that is time in Singapore, not a hotel.
What does TAP’s Portugal stopover include?
TAP lets you stop in Lisbon or Porto for 1 to 10 days at no extra airfare, on the outbound or return leg. You also get a code for 25 percent off a domestic flight within Portugal during your stay, plus partner offers on hotels, restaurants, tours, and museums. There is no free hotel, and each partner sets its own discount.
TAP’s own pages disagree on the partner count (some say 150 or more, others 500 or more), and some partner promo codes on the list are visibly dated, so test a code before you plan around it.
How long can you stop over in Iceland?
Up to 7 nights at no extra airfare on most Icelandair fares, and up to 21 nights on Economy Flex and Saga Premium Flex. The cheapest Economy Light fare caps the stopover at 1 to 3 nights. Stays of 8 to 21 nights cannot be booked online, so you contact the service center.
The stopover covers the flight only, with no hotel or transfers. The value is splitting a transatlantic trip with a very different place (geothermal pools, glaciers, whale watching) without buying a separate ticket.
Do Emirates and Ethiopian give free hotels too?
Yes, on qualifying layovers, but the eligibility windows are the fuzziest in this post. Emirates’ Dubai Connect covers a hotel, meals, and transfers for long connections, and Ethiopian Airlines gives a free room, meals, and a transit visa for 8 to 24 hour layovers in Addis Ababa.
Emirates. The airline’s terms page sets a 6 to 26 hour window for First and Business, while a 2020 announcement and a July 2026 guide say other classes qualify too. Your connection must be the shortest available. Emirates’ page says to request at least 12 hours ahead but also that it only accepts requests 24 hours before the inbound flight, so request early. The booking tool tells you at checkout whether you qualify.
Ethiopian. You generally need Ethiopian flights on both legs, and you get no hotel if an earlier connection exists inside the window. Travel guides also report passengers being turned away despite meeting the hours. Ask at the transit desk with your onward boarding pass in hand.
How do you book a stopover on purpose?
Search a multi-city itinerary, choose the hub you want to visit as the middle stop, and set the connection to 24 hours or more. Then compare the total against a direct routing: a stopover fare is often the same price, and sometimes lower, but you have to price it to know.
The power move is combining two programs on one trip. Fly TAP to Lisbon (stopover), connect on Turkish to Istanbul (second stopover), then continue to Asia. Two mini-trips on one ticket. Some airlines also allow a stopover on the return leg, so you can visit different cities in each direction.
What mistakes ruin a stopover?
The five that cost people the most are visa assumptions, separate tickets, late booking, bag handling, and bad time math. Each is avoidable with ten minutes of checking before you pay.
1. Visa assumptions. Do not assume you can enter the country without checking first. Some countries require a transit visa even if you never leave the airport. The US requires all international passengers to clear immigration and customs, even for brief connections. Check TIMATIC (the database airlines use) for your passport and transit country.
2. Separate tickets. If you book two separate tickets and miss your connection, the airline owes you nothing. Book the stopover as part of a single itinerary. Turkish Airlines also requires one round-trip booking for the free hotel.
3. Not booking in advance. Turkish Airlines wants your hotel application at least 72 hours before the flight, Emirates wants 12 to 24 hours’ notice, and Changi’s free tour fills up (pre-booking opens 50 days out). Walk-up options exist but never count on them.
4. Checked bags. Confirm with the airline whether your bags are checked through to your final destination or must be reclaimed during the stopover. Pack overnight essentials in your carry-on regardless.
5. Time math. A 12-hour layover is really about 8 hours of usable city time after deducting airport exit (1 hour) and return for security (3 hours). Under 5 to 6 hours, stay in the terminal.
